That time we went on boat

We went out in a friends boat this past weekend with no real goal. He wanted to go for a ride, and so did my big guy. So we made a plan that morning.

The water seemed relatively calm and I wanted to see puffins. I have never seen one in the wild, so we took off. We were thinking that we would be on the water no more than 4-5h, but that didn't account for the minor detours, trying to get a picture of a puffin, the legends of Ironbound, and zig-zagging through sail boat race.

The trip out

The trip to the puffins was pretty "boring" which I have to say I enjoy, especially in a boat. So I didn't take out my camera. We spent the time enjoying the views, seagulls, and chatting. When we got of the bay the going was a little slower, and a little rougher, but nothing serious.

The Puffins

The thing that you don't hear a lot about puffins is that they are small and fast birds. I guess I just assumed that since they aren't great fliers that they would be slow, but no. Because they can't really glide around like a sea gull, they have flap their wings fast and they just dart around.

Because of this darting, and the boat moving, and not really getting very close, most of my pictures look like smudges on the lens. I swear that was a bird, but I just couldn't hold focus on it. I have no idea how photographers did it with manual focus. I can't imagine how many rolls of film they may have gone through just to get a picture of a puffin in flight.

Some Seals

After the puffins we went to the other side of the island to see some very lazy seals, one got hit with a wave and took it personally.

Ironbound

From the seals we started back, we anchored at Ironbound Island for lunch and a break.

As you well know, I have already started reading Rockbound which is definitely not based on real people from Ironbound.

Heading home

The adventure wasn't over, we still needed to get back to dock, through a bunch of little boats.
